The Door in the Sky

When Logan Patterson was born, he flew through the skies of dreamland. He flew because no one told him he couldn’t. Like we all do, he had come from a door in the sky. In the beginning he would fly up to the door and look through to the other side. When he did, a voice would tell him not to go back through, not yet.

As he got older and learned to walk in his waking life, he lost the ability to fly. He grew even older and learned to speak and forgot about the door entirely.

Years passed and Logan turned twenty. The waking world told him he was a man, but in dreamland he was still just a boy. He could jump great distances and even bend space, but he rarely flew and not for very long.

One dream he looked up and saw the door in the sky. He turned to his dream friends as he pointed to the door.

“Where does that door go?” He asked the dragon with a top hat. “Has it always been there?”

The dragon shrugged. He did not know. He was just a dream after all, but he agreed to fly up and look for little Logan. When the dragon returned, logan asked what the dragon had seen.

The dragon shook his head and told him he couldn’t say just yet. He would have to wait until he was older. However, there was one thing he could tell him.

Logan’s eyes lit up with eager excitement.

“Be honest with yourself, love when it’s hard, trust when you can, and be brave when it comes.” Said the dragon.

Logan thought about the dragon’s words for a moment then nodded.

They continued to play for a bit longer, but all too soon it was time for Logan to wake. The dragon and Logan said their fair wells and the dragon flew off into the skies of dreamland.

More years passed and little Logan turned forty. Throughout those years in his waking life, he remembered the dragon’s words and he learned to love when it was hard.

One night in dreamland little Logan was on an adventure with his dream dog Sam when he came across the dragon again. Logan told the dragon that he had learned to love when it was hard, and the dragon smiled at him.

When it was time for the dragon to leave, Logan stopped him.

“Will you tell me what you saw now?”

The dragon shook its head.

“Be brave when it comes, continue to love when it’s hard, and I’ll tell you when you’re older.”

Then they parted ways, and the dragon flew into the skies of dreamland.

Life flew by faster and faster, and little Logan turned sixty. His waking body had begun to slow but in dream land he was still just a boy. He had learned to be honest with himself, and because of that honesty he loved deeper than he before.

One night in dream land he found himself sitting on a grassy hill. It was the hill his wife and he had shared their first kiss and was one of his favorite places to visit. As he sat the dragon swooped down and sat next to him. They said their hello’s and enjoyed each other’s company for a time. Logan told the dragon how he’d learned to be honest with himself, and the dragon smiled.

When it was time for the dragon to leave, Logan stopped him.

“Wait, before you go.” Said Logan. “Will you tell me what’s behind the door in the sky?”

The dragon shook its head.

“Be brave, when it comes, love when it’s hard, and keep being honest with yourself.” Said the dragon. “I’ll tell you when you’re older.”

Then they parted ways, and the dragon flew into the skies of dreamland.

In what felt like only a few short years little Logan turned eighty. His joints hurt and his muscles were stiff. He had learned to trust in the care of others and his heart had been filled with a lifetime of love. He had spent his waking life with the love of his life. Their kids had kids who were starting to have kids.

One night, he smiled at his wife and gave her a kiss. He wished her sweet dreams and turned out the lights.

The flowers and fields in dreamland had grown. He looked out at castles, mountains, groves, and seas which held all the adventures that he had been on in dreamland. When he did, he found he was happy.

As he admired dreamland from the top of the tower owned by a pencil named John. The dragon flew down and sat next to him.

“Hello dragon,” said Logan.

“Hello Logan,” replied the dragon.

They smiled at each other and sat for a bit longer.

Then the dragon huffed and stood.

“Wait, before you go.” Logan started to say when the dragon turned and gave him a smile.

“Would you like to know what’s behind the door?” asked the dragon.

Little Logan looked up and smiled.

“I’m finally old enough?”

“Yes,” replied the dragon.” Climb upon my back and I shall fly you to the door.”

Little Logan jumped to his feet and climbed upon the dragons back. The dragon flapped his wings, and they began to fly. They few higher and higher but the door seemed so far away.

“I think we should turn back.” said little Logan over the rushing sounds of wind. “This dream has lasted far too long. I’ll miss breakfast with my wife.”

“Be brave,” replied the dragon.

They continued to fly until the door was in reach. They had flown so high that dreamland looked small. He wanted to turn back, but the dragon’s words stuck in his head. The door was so close now and soon his hand was on the handle.

The door opened gently and silent.

The only sound was the flapping of the dragon’s wings. He looked behind the door but saw nothing and turned back to the dragon.

“I don’t see a thing.” He said.

The dragon’s wings flapped slower now as he urged little Logan forward with a head nod.

“Be brave,” said the dragon.

So little Logan was brave and stuck his hand in. It was warm. His arm and chest followed as he stepped inside. His whole body was warm except for his head which he held outside the door. He grabbed the door frame as the worth in the door pulled on him.

Looking at the dragon he asked for help.

The dragon turned to Logan and looked at him face to face. The beating of the dragons wings now slower than before.

Flap, flap 1…2…3… Flap 1…2…3…

“Be brave,” said the dragon.

With trust, love and honestly in his heart Logan was brave, and went through the door. As he did, he felt nothing wrong. The space around him was filled with stars. It was beautiful and felt like home. He liked it here and would put it on his list of favorite places in dreamland.

Then he thought about his wife and how she must be waiting for him to wake up. So, he turned back to the door. He would ask for the dragon to take him back to dreamland so he could wake, but dreamland was gone.

In its place was his wife and kids and their kids standing around him. They were gathered at his bedside and began to look sad. As they cried, he wept with them. He wanted to hold them and kiss them and tell them he was ok. They did not hear him. As they left, he thought his goodbyes. He then smiled at his wife, and he swore she smiled back at him.

“Be brave my love,” Logan said as he waved goodbye.

Then ever so lightly little Logan closed the door in the sky.

The End.
